Except for the basic features any instant messaging app must provide, Yahoo Messenger has several additional options. There's a feature, which can notify you about incoming emails, instant messages when someone comes on or goes offline or the upcoming event in your calendar.
Overview of the Main Features
The app comes with a variety of stealth settings that guarantee your privacy. You can be online for some contacts and, at the same time, be offline for others. One can also block messages from some contacts (it is possible to block up to 100 contacts simultaneously).
Users can also personalize their accounts with the help of audibles, avatars or themed backgrounds. There's even a special service that allows you to personalize your avatar. A variety of talking animated characters can make your chats more live.
Webcam capabilities also deserve attention. Users can see a contact's webcam video or show your own videos.
There are also some features making conversation fun and easy. For instance, you can open a video right in the conversation window together with your friend or create chat rooms and talk to a few users simultaneously.
If you need more features such as playing games or online shopping, you can install special plug-ins broadening your functionality.
Summary
All in all, Yahoo Messenger is a good IM tool allowing users to share text messages with each other but, unfortunately, it is discontinued now. Yahoo doesn't offer any alternatives to substitute the app.
